My Favorite App

Snapchat. Yep. No doubt.

What inspired me to write this post was a discussion my professor had with our Social Media Marketing class. She expressed her negative feelings towards Snapchat and how it's not as effective. I think another reason she's not a huge fan of the app is because of the "egotistic and cocky" young male CEO's. I agree with her that Snapchat may not be the best way to reach audiences for some businesses, but it definitely can help promote awareness of other's who do it in the right way.

My favorite feature of Snapchat is the segmented news/discovery page. To name a few sources there's Daily Mail, Tastemade, Food Netwoork, People, Cosmopolitan, Washington Post, BuzzFeed, E!News, ESPN, Vogue, Tasty. I almost all of these daily. The customization affect of this approach is allowing the audience to choose from a large source based off of their desires. Some sources I click through quickly to get a broad feeling of what's currently going on and then for others I read the articles within and may even further research. Last night I was looking through Daily Mail and came across a free trial offer from Christie Brinkley's Skincare face cream. I proceeded to click on the link to her webpage after the article and ordered the face cream and eye-boosting serum. This is an example of a business successfully marketing their product. I'm sure they had many sales because anyone with a Snapchat has the discover section and access to the news and articles. The images are stimulating and good for consumer's today because of the visual effects and quick click through capabilities. Snapchat also uses location services to promote events going on in the individuals area, which can generate lots of awareness. There's also stories that people in the designated area can contribute to and show their experience such as College Gameday or MyCampus stories.

Another feature I love about Snapchat is being able to connect with my friends in real-time and know what people are up too. The instant connections are very satisfying. I'm in around 10 snapchat groups within my friends, so it's a great way to all communicate quickly. Lots of funny things happen within back and forth snaps and my screenshots or saved snaps are some of my favorite photos. The digital features of facial change and artistic add-ins that customize to your face are really fun to mess around with and provide entertainment. There are sponsored filters based on the time of year or events going on. For example, for SharkWeek there's a shark filter and for gameday there's a football helmet, etc. A huge and free opportunity for companies is available via Snapchat because a lot of times peoples snaps and stories will motivate me to get a product or go somewhere. For instance, I see a snap of a Starbucks coffee drink and then I want one and usually will go get one. Or I'll see someone at a new restaurant and the food looks delicious so I want to go there and most likely will. Businesses need to realize the power of Snapchat in consumer's today. The high-speed connections it makes is endless. Forbes reported that the #1 trend in Social Media Marketing this year is that "Snap's evolution will result in interesting new opportunities" and I couldn't agree more. Snapchat has transformed users expectations. The focus on in-the-moment and live content is the new normal. Snap plans to continue to satisfy customer's needs by evolving their app with new updates, which will provide even more marketing opportunities.
