Cannes Festival Day 5

I arrived at the festival around noon today due to a long long night at the Gotcha night club where we saw Future perform. We thought the concert started at 12, but we quickly learned that he actually came on at 3am..... Since we were some of the earliest people there we walked straight up the the stage and there we stood for 3 hours in order to have front row. Pretty dedicated fans! Dancing girls and guys bumping into us got old real fast, but the DJ played great pop mashups while we waited. Also, the ambiance of Gotha was really cool with all the lights, effects and entertaining table service.

Anyways, the first session I attended was hosted by Dropbox at the Cannes Lions School. The two men spoke about the importance of being transparent in creative process. They also noted the need to "show your math" aka how you got to solution. I use Dropbox for school, so it was interesting to hear the science behind it. Next I headed up to the terrace to listen to Hitting the Right Notes with Brand Partners with Nick Jonas and Marriott International. They discussed the correlation between music and traveling because traveling to concerts and such is a huge part of the journey and experience. They both stressed the importance of authenticity, customer loyalty and partnerships.

Okay now time to share about my absolute favorite session of my Cannes Festival experience so far... A$AP Rocky and Viacom! It may sound bad that my favorite talk has been a major celebrity, but it was truly an insightful and inspiring conversation. Obviously I don't know A$AP, so I didn't know what to expect and kind of assumed he'd be kind of basic and in and out like the other celebrities had been. But no, he showed up with such a positive energy and instantly connected on a more personal level. He seemed just like a friend and he had a great sense of humor. Not only was he charming and charismatic, but his words and advice really struck and enlightened me. A few of his phrases like "wak is wak," "he's a stoner but a genius" and "I'm a student of culture" sound strange, but made perfect sense. "Wak is wak" refers to the phrase "trash is trash." He stressed the importance of being real with your own work and others in order to produce the best possible outcome. He believes it takes trial and error and not to rush it and rather perfect it, so that it's not "trash." The phrase "he's a stoner but a genius" is suggesting not to judge people based off of appearance or demeanor because they could be much brighter than you think. To close the talk, he spoke directly to CEO's and upper management etc. by asking them to try not to judge when hiring or listening to ideas of people below them. A$AP emphasized the growing impact and intelligence of youth and how they are the future. He was humble in stating, "I'm a student of culture," because he believes times are always changing and there's much to learn. He said it wasn't just him creating the magic, but rather his whole internal team. However, A$AP is the chief creative genius who thrives in the departments of music, art and fashion. He's made such an impact within the industries and displays the importance of branding, uniqueness and creativity. The session was so great because of his radiant energy and passion for what he does. He answered the crowds questions with uplifting advice and hung out with us for a solid 5 minutes after. He didn't just run through the motions and let people take some selfies with him, but he actually talked to us and literally and figuratively got on our level. He's definitely one of my new idol's now. I have a passion for photography and after hearing him speak he really inspired me to carry it out.

After being pretty starstruck, some friends and I went and hung out at the Cannes Lion Beach where we waited to hear from Alex Da Kid. The session was called Shakers and Stirrers and Alex was featured because he's a major force of change in the music industry right now. He has written many famous songs and worked with lots of artists. Currently, Alex is collaborating with IBMx's new technology called Watson. It's the first time a data crunching machine has been used to create music and it drew together some of the most trending hashtags and slogans over the past 5 years and turned them into lyrics. Pretty neat! Alex's record label company KidinaKorner is different than most because it houses a record label, music publishing, commercial production and marketing agency, so it's like the ultimate package for a client. Alex is a mastermind in the music industry and definitely ahead of his time, which made it exciting to hear about what's to come.

The day ended earlier than normal for us because the main beaches had private events and well ultimately we were starving and exhausted. About 10 of us went and ate at a restaurant called New York New York that I actually ate at the night before, but it's just that good, and then we took the train back to ole JLP.
