Cannes Festival Day 3

Day 3 could be considered the first real day of the festival. Everything was open! All the beaches and cabanas had free food and drinks, which was really awesome. Walking into the Palais I could immediately tell it was way more crowded. A big group of us rushed to the Joanna Coles in Conversation with Karlie Kloss. I was excited to see Joanna because she's such a strong woman force in the business world. Karlie has also done very well in her modeling career and entrepreneurship's. Sadly, this talk disappointed me. The professors definitely were right about celebrities not always making a great impression or overall impact. I admired Karlie's passions and desire to speak her voice rather than be "just a vehicle for products and brands." The talk just seemed to drag and be very repetitive. I'm very impressed at what all she's done and managed for the age of 24. She compared herself to Hannah Montana bc before social media she kept her model life and school life. Karlie took advantage of her opportunities and used her platform to do good. She created Kodes with Klossy, which teaches girls the tools to code and build apps or websites. It's great how she's helped young girls to grow and follow their passions. I really wish that I had heard more from Joanna about her experience in the fashion industry because she has accomplished so much and knows all about marketing, branding, advertising, PR, editing, etc.

The next session I attended was What NASA Can Teach Us? I wasn't super interested in this talk, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. The first speaker spoke about the importance of openness and he stated, "breakthroughs rarely happen in isolation." The path to breakthrough...
  1. A scene forms
  2. New technology starts to form
  3. Economic opportunity presents itself
  4. Somehow, someway, it gets open
The speaker then brought in a speaker from NASA because they are the largest industry to embrace openness. The statements, "space has become a platform for innovation" illustrates this fact. It was so cool to hear about NASA's current projects and future plans. They are building a space port, which will allow for a lot more exploration of the solar system and more astronauts. Also, I had no idea that there's water on the moon and they plan to use it as a resource in space travel instead of bringing from earth. NASA describes itself as a problem solving agency, which is what leads to invention. They're constantly collaborating as a team and with the public in order to extract the best ideas possible. Allowing the public to join in and create brings much reward. A challenge for the public provides unique and brilliant ideas. Great solutions actually are applied and expanded to issues on earth as well, such as the Space Poop Challenge that not only spurred answer to NASA but helped immobile people and hospital care. Overall, a very inspiring and optimistic talk about the future.

Now it was time get outside and hit the beaches for the first time! We all were eager to get to the free food and drinks that fellow classmates had been praising about. First stop was Facebook beach, which actually ended up being my favorite beach of the day. The blue ambiance, wooden cabanas, lush pier and interactive art gave off great vibes. The food, snacks and juices were free flowing and really delicious. I could've hung out there all day! We finally decided it was time to go after stuffing our faces and enjoying the atmosphere. Off to YouTube Beach! This beach was right up there with Facebook Beach for sure. So many umbrellas and comfy chairs to sit and chill we're very smart features. The slide into a ball pit and beach volleyball were a hit as well. I felt as though I was on an adult playground. We hung out and listened to the 3 person band called DUKE BOX, which was beat boxing. Their talent blew my mind and I could've watched them all day. I even approached them after and asked what days and times they'd be performing the rest of the week and I definitely plan on attending. After feeling hot and full, a few of us went to the Spotify House and learned about their new features. I got to personalize a Spotify ad, which was interactive and fun. A few blocks down, we made our way to the Penthouse Suite for the Girls Lounge hosted by The Feminine Quotient. I couldn't have been more pleased to be there! I felt as though I was in a spa. The AC, stunning view, amenities, food, drinks, everything was perfect. I got a free manicure and massage! I talked to several ladies who worked for the company and learned about their past and experiences. Such a friendly environment and gave me a sense of pride and power for being a woman. To wrap up the day, I attended the Award Ceremony. It was a much bigger event than I thought and really put together nicely. There was a performance in the beginning and great visual effects, lights and music. It was exciting to see the Gold Lion winners because their work was top of the line and deserving of praise. So much goes into such a production and the messages can really have worldwide effects and benefit society.
